The Engineering Design Process
To successfully manufacture design products on an industrial scale, certain planning methods need to be implemented. Many companies rely on several tried and tested systems to ensure that products are produced efficiently and consistently. One of these methods is the Design Process.
The Design Process is an engineering methodology that outlines a structure for tackling not just the manufacture of design products, but for approaching any problem with an engineering structure.
The Design Process is as follows:
- 1 – Define the Problem
- 2 – Do Background Research
- 3 – Specify Requirements
- 4 – Brainstorm Solutions
- 5 – Choose the Best Solution
- 6 – Do Development Work
- 7 – Build a Prototype
- 8 – Test and Redesign
While this is a sequential process, engineers do not always adhere to the steps stringently. It is sometimes necessary to go back to previous stages, or move onto further processes if other stages have gone well. Albeit, it is more a tried and tested guide for engineers to follow.
