How Laser Engraving and Laser Marking Are Different

While the processes share similarities, there are several key differences between laser engraving and laser marking techniques. Both use a laser beam to create a design on the surface of a material, but the differences lie in how the laser does this.

Laser Engraving

Laser engraving works by physically altering the surface of a material using a powerful laser beam. This creates a cavity in the surface which is noticeable to the eye and touch. The surface of material is permanently altered in this way.

Laser Marking

Laser marking is carried out by using a low-powered laser beam that is moved slowly across the surface of a material. This creates a contrasting mark which is visually noticeable, but it is not physically engraved into the material as with laser engraving.

Because laser marking doesn’t physically alter the material, it’s a popular choice for marking medical devices as well as stainless steel and titanium parts.
